There's nothing really weird though. We have IVF and people often "freeze" eggs and sperm for later use. If the woman planned it with the guy and he ends up dying before she gets pregnant, and she wants his genetic line to continue in his memory, I personally find that touching.
It's sad the kid won't know his father except through pictures and stories, but it's far better than a deadbeat dad. At least the kid still has a somewhat positive father figure in his life.
I lean towards this being worse because in the one-night-stand case, there's the case where IF she knew who the father is, she'd involve him.
I have a friend with a deadbeat dad of 3 kids. No, believe me, a dead war hero would be much better. The kids know their father is alive, know he's a deadbeat and at this point, even the kids don't want anything to do with him and prefer when he's not around (and thankfully, he only comes out to "see them" once every 5-6 months, for an hour, then gets mad and leaves).
