A lot of modern anime is designed to be fetishistic on purpose as a business decision in order to generate more sales. Part of this results in a lot of anime having greater appeal to people with mental illness.
Plenty of new anime isn't designed to be cutsey, there are just so many types and genres. Nobody would call jujutsu kaisen "gay", and it's one of the biggest shows of the last few years.
