Those are Uruk-hai, Saruman's super-orcs. Regular orcs are elves who were corrupted by Morgoth before the First Age. They breed like rabbits so there must be some females somewhere.
maybe because in Tolkein's age females stayed at home while men did the fighting; hence we only see male orcs because that was the only relevant thing about them as the opposing force.
That's a good point. Perhaps Melkor setup the caricature baby factory that feminists complain about.
That makes sense, but I don't think it was written anywhere. I suppose Morgoth could have transmogrified some female elves.

The hobbit and lotr were the only books from middle earth lore published in his lifetime.
His son Christopher gathered and curated his notes and published The Silmarillion after Tolkien passed. Lots of other stories have been published based on JRRs notes.
It's a relatively challenging read.
