Growing up, my best friend’s oldest sister was a brilliant girl, but totally susceptible to social pressure. She dated a goth, next week she had a bullring in her nose. Dated a hippie, next week she stopped using deodorant and grew out her armpit hair. Dated an indie rocker guy, became obsessed with small indie bands. After that she dated a girl and became a huge pride advocate. Then she tried to commit suicide, dropped out of school for a year, later went off to college, I lost track of her after that. HUGE leftwinger the entire time.
Caught up with her a year or two ago. She’s now in her 40s, works for Amazon, has a husband, a cat and dog (no kids), lives in suburbia, and is … normal. Actually seemed happy tho, which she never did before.
I get this/feel it on a spiritual level, lol. Though I'm not female. And would never, ever do anything even remotely... "Queer". But yeah, look, I fucking get it.
I wish I didn't, though.
And beyond that, I've seen the "phenomenon" you describe so many times that it is no longer funny. In the Anglosphere and beyond.
So yeah, this holds, very clearly, with my anecdotal experience...

Fuck, there is hope for us all, then...
