We were told not to use our real names, online was a separate world from the real (being something you actively connected to), and the teachers and politicians weren't also trying to groom you.

It is quite the dichotomy. Growing up, we were told to obfuscate as much info as possible. No names, locations, birthdays, phone numbers.
Now, most sites demand that information and some sites will ban you if you try to get away with not giving them your information.
