Just amazing. I have watched a small variety of zoo "secrets" tv shows, and that is a shared belief that the animals "consent" to whatever treatments get performed because they're "voluntarily" performing a desired behavior that is consistently rewarded with treats/food. Video example "Participating in their own treatment/healthcare."
In one show, a zookeeper needed to tranquilize a gorilla. While preparing for it, she mentioned having a metaphorical 'trust bank' with it. The gorilla developed trust in this keeper over the time she gave it food without real consequence. Giving it the legitimate poke that knocked it out would break the trust, and it would need time to develop the same level of trust as before.
Like, no shit. All the animals want to do is live, eat, and procreate. The vast majority of them have no understanding of medicine or the concept of long-term health. Go ahead and vex them since tHe ScIeNcE says so, but please stop pretending that they're doing anything more than following Pavlovian programming.
I mean they did the same shit with capoochin monkeys in captivity and colbert covered part of it in like 2006 on his parody show. Apparently they would use jello as a form of currency with the monkeys, but it backfired when the female monkeys would offer sexual favors to anyone and anything in exchange for it, including some of the zoo-keepers who would later be sentenced to 20 years in jail for that stuff.

They're literally using the same fucking logic as child groomers.
