early christians probably thought they were being edgy and "taking it back" like the roman empire used crosses as a symbol of fear to make people stay in line or else they get tortured up on the cross. Still, it's an essentially passive thing to use your oppressors symbol. They also used the fish symbol for Jesus but that's not as prevalent.
I find it strange that this comment is so heavily upvoted and the one before it has negative points. Maybe I'm just not up on scripture. Jesus was killed and was resurrected three days later, no? And being hung on a cross with nails and rubbed with vinegar sounds like torture to me. I don't think that part would offend him though, more that people focus on the iconography for their worship.
I suspect that a lot of Christians know almost nothing about the scripture. Especially those who were raised going to those non-denominational mega churches.
