I don't get how he could be missing that long in a place that isn't that big, unless he didn't tell a single person he was going for a hike in Griffith Park. It's like 4 square miles, much of it heavily traveled, which narrows it down a whole lot.
Sad story, but I guess a good takeaway is never go hiking alone without telling someone where you're going.
I'm guessing he either got some random health emergency like a massive stroke out of nowhere (don't forget to get your 2nd booster!), or he was doing drugs and hit the golden vein, because the park is seriously tiny. Even if he broke his legs he could have dragged himself to the nearest trail, they're all over the place. Hell, he could have just yelled for help and someone would have found him in half an hour. He could have probably called 911, too, the park is surrounded by suburbs so it should have full cell coverage.

Is it seriously that small? He must have fallen and broken a leg or something.

The LA Parks web site says over 4,210 acres, which is 6.6 sq. miles.
And maybe have a satellite phone or a flare gun.
