I would argue Taiwan is actually a big deal considering their semiconductor capacity.
We lose them and things slow to a crawl in the Western world.
This is correct - Taiwan still accounts for over 50% of the global supply, and we've already seen the knock on effects in other industries from the current shortage.
New fab plants are being built in the US, but won't come online until next year, and volume production won't start until 2024.
not disagreeing with your point but if chips are a strategic consideration wouldn't it be a lot cheaper and better long-term to throw money into a manhattan project for domestic production than even the smallest military action defending taiwan
and the chip production would stop anyway since any major economic production would be stalled during a conflict
Taiwan has always been a part of China. I say that not out of support for the PRC but because it's not such a great idea to have them making all of our chips.
West China has always been a part of Taiwan.
