Misinformation is the buzzword they use because they can’t flat out say lie, that would put them under libel and slander. They always skirt just as close as they can while putting out disinformation so they could claim ignorance. “Well these ‘experts’ said X. How were we supposed to know they were deliberately lying?”
"fake news" was what the media came up with first. Trump turned it back on them. "Misinformation" is the new, more successful attempt, that "authoritative," and the "fact checking" system. It's bullshit if you're aware, but probably more compelling if you've never experienced life outside the plantation, so to speak. In that case, you don't need to even think, or provide actual rebuttals, just say "because authority says so."
IMO, it sounds more professional than "fake news". Speaking with long words that flow together is a great way to get dumb dumbs to think you are smart or superior.
I think you're right, after attacking the term "fake news" over and over, they wanted to do the same thing but needed a new phrase so they could pretend it was different.

It's just a political smear. There's no such thing as misinformation; only information and lies.
"Misinformation" is a synonym for "Wrongthink"
