People's taste in books is so freaking bad now I don't even read reviews, especially on Amazon. Crap plots, characters that suck, no sense of spelling, punctuation, grammar, or good story telling, more like something I read in the 4th grade and thought was "cool"--every female character is a "kick ass" Mary Sue. Every male character is a pussy. Deus ex machina everywhere, and not even well done. And the reviewers: Omg this sooooo great! 5 stars, this is the best book ever, you have to read this....
The sad thing is that I legitimately enjoyed John Dies at the End. Then again, I read it years ago. I don't know how much I'd actually care for it now.
I am very picky about my reading, so much of what is released today is total garbage. If I find an author who writes something I like, I tend to binge on all their stuff. For example, I have everything David Weber has published save a select few titles. John Ringo, same thing. Michael Z WIlliamson, John Conroe, Larry Correia, Tom Kratman, all are authors I read.
Look at 1963: Memorable books divided by total new books = a teensy tiny number. It's always this way. There will be a couple of really memorable books if we have a good year. Like music, movies, TV shows, almost everything produced is for immediate consumption and is quickly forgotten.

Turns my stomach.

The movie wasn't bad, either... if you're into low-budget, sci-fi body horror.
