But the marxists broke the system by using a non-cooperative prisoner's dilemma tactic. They used any means available to harm their opposition yet retreated to the first principles when those same tactics were used against them.
Through attrition the "activists" gained control over institutions. Mostly because men couldn't be bothered with arguing with women over their petty, incremental gains that added up to a massive power position over time.
Because of a previous generations worth of indoctrination the weak men which held positions of authority gave in because their greatest fear was being thought of as "racist, sexist, fascist, oppressor" and not hip and with it anymore.

Weakness of liberal systems has less to do with "everyone gets a voice" (because that's a blatant lie when we get to scale of mass communication) and more with "most impactful decisions are still made by handful of actors who shall bear no direct consequences of them". As such, it will inevitably get rotten. I won't even bother addressing democracy.
