I like Clerks well enough but yeah, it's not really satirical genius in its content like some of its critics would have you believe. I like Chasing Amy as well for it being an examination of male insecurity...even Dogma had its moments...but everything else by Smith really doesn't hold up at all.
I would argue he used to be funny and likable, but as the years passed, he became a bit more of a douche to me.
The problem with Smith is that he is an insecure man-child who wanted to be accepted and liked by everyone around him. He loves getting critical praise, but the moment you shit on his work, you'll see his insecurities at play. He can't handle negative criticism...he never has been able to. When critics trashed Mallrats, he played to them and quickly denounced it back in the day. He re-embraced it years later when he realized there was an audience that liked it, but yeah, at the time he tried everything to get back into the good graces of critics because he couldn't take the bad word.
Same thing happened with Cop Out and every other failure he has made...it's the story of a guy who so desperately wants to be embraced and accepted but can't take the heat of criticism against him. That is Smith's biggest flaw...he's very insecure and just wants to be loved and embrace but can't take the heat when that doesn't happen.
Hence this debacle...I think he purposely played to the critics knowing full well he'd get their praise because that's really what he has always been about...he wants to be accepted into that bubble.
I actually thought Mallrats was his best movie. It was kind of funny and stupid and would have been great if that's the only movie he made like that. Instead he's made dozens. All stupider and less funny. The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot was one of the worst movies I'd seen in years (why did two of the worst movies in decades- J&SBR and Wonder Woman 84- come out without one word about how fucking awful they are?).
You like Clerks? How about TEN MORE CLERKS MOVIES! All new stupid characters! Jokes that are exactly the same. I'll just repeat the same words in a different tone so my fans will laugh! And I'll put my daughter in it because I'm like that. Maybe I'll get some old sci fi actors like Sam Jones or the guy that plays Scotty and they'll act all down to earth while Jay goes all fanboy!
Fuck, spare me.
Rob Zombie is getting there too but with old horror actors.
Yeah, I know. I wasn't a fan either of Jay and Bob Reboot....I enjoyed the first one as dopey dumb road comedy (not high art but I got a few laughs out of it) but the sequel? Fucking hell it was rough sitting through that thing. Much like he insisted pushing his talent less gold digging man hating wife on us, now he has to push his equally talent less daughter on us.
Clerks II had its moments, but I really DON'T need a Clerks III...he pushed it with II and just barely got away with it...But I don't think I need to see those guys a third time...especially when he's basically just rehashing the plot of Zack and Miri Make a Porno with it.
Apparently the plot is Randal has a heart attack and survives but realizes he hasn't done anything with his life so he decides to make a movie at the store...gee! Because you didn't already try to turn the Clerks documentary into a fictional movie with Zack and Miri already, did ya Kevin?
In some ways, he should just stick to podcasting. He can be entertaining telling stories...I mean the old Evening With Kevin Smith DVD's were great when he was openly dishing on Hollywood. But yeah, even then, his podcasts have become pretty banal.
I know it sounds mean...but I think I preferred Pre-Weed Pre Crybaby Kevin Smith over what he has become. I'm sure he is a good dude at heart and I don't wish ill on him, but I really much preferred pre-weed KS over post-weed KS.
I don't necessarily mind Mallrats. It has its flaws but Jason Lee mostly makes up for them. And it has a pretty decent soundtrack.
I agree with almost everything you said, except I thought Clerks II was horrendous. Why make another? The sequel was fucking garbage. And yes, his daughter is talentless. His wife was slightly above average looking and now she looks like a desiccated corpse.
And yeah, his Evening with Kevin Smith talks were funny. Better than his movies.
Red State was good too but every other movie but Mallrats was average or less than.
