"Biden aims blistering attack at tech companies over vaccine falsehoods" Surely Fox poses as big or even bigger problem?
· 9h9 hours ago
it's both
· 9h9 hours ago
We really need to call it for what it is: Murdoch media. It's the same all over the Western world.
· 9h9 hours ago
Fox is flat out disinformation. It is willful, deliberate, and malicious.

JFK Jr is one of the Disinformation Dozen on FB. He was banned on Instagram (owned by FB) but he was not banned on FB. How does that make any sense?
· 8h8 hours ago
Yes but tech companies may be more persuadeable for Biden.
8h8 hours ago
Astute observation. Since Fox presents itself as a provider of news as well as opinion, criticism of Fox can be effectively portrayed as an attack on free speech. So Fox is in the "too hard" box, and we pretend it's not part of the problem.
· 8h8 hours ago
@FoxNews is a way bigger problem, not just in propagating falsehoods about vaccines, but for trying to destroy our democracy brick by brick, night after dark night.
7h7 hours ago
Yes, Fox does. But it’s harder to lean on Fox, for various reasons. Also, bear in mind that bitching about social media platforms may help blunt the criticism from the right that they’re “censoring” conservatives.

Curious to learn if there is anything that can be directed against their use of Propaganda? A news channel should be just that.

The Internet Doesn’t Have to Be Awful
Our democratic habits have been killed off by an internet kleptocracy that profits from disinformation, polarization, and rage. Here’s how to fix that.
Story by Anne Applebaum and Peter Pomerantsev APRIL 2021 ISSUE
The world’s autocracies have long understood the possibilities afforded by the tools tech companies have created, and have made use of them. China’s leaders have built an internet based on censorship, intimidation, entertainment, and surveillance; Iran bans Western websites; Russian security services have the legal right to obtain personal data from Kremlin-friendly social-media platforms, while Kremlin-friendly troll farms swamp the world with disinformation. Autocrats, both aspiring and actual, manipulate algorithms and use fake accounts to distort, harass, and spread “alternative facts.” The United States has no real answer to these challenges, and no wonder: We don’t have an internet based on our democratic values of openness, accountability, and respect for human rights. We don’t have an internet based on our democratic values of openness, accountability, and respect for human rights. An online system controlled by a tiny number of secretive companies in Silicon Valley is not democratic but rather oligopolistic, even oligarchic.
Could these platforms have done more? As a matter of fact, Facebook keeps careful tabs on the toxicity of American discourse. ... Among other things, it created a new ranking system, designed to demote spurious, hyper-partisan sources and to boost “authoritative news content.”

We can have a debate about whether the gov't should flag misinformation on Facebook. But the "spying" narrative put forward by Fox's Peter Doocy is nonsense, which 30 seconds of Googling would have revealed.

And reporting suggests that this was what many suggested it might have been in the first place: Carlson reaching out to foreigners (apparently Russians) who were being monitored (as many foreigners are) and getting wrapped up in what’s known as “incidental surveillance.” In other words, Carlson wouldn’t have been the target.
At least with those things, we’re talking about the murky, shadowy world of government surveillance, where it’s difficult to fully prove or disprove something and lines are indeed often pushed or stepped over. The definition of “spying” is also subjective.
Really good books. Shame about the debilitating TDS.
She's also wife of our ex-foreign minister.
He's a very interesting colorful character. He fought in Afghanistan during the 1980s. Against the Soviets.
More recently, the Russian spies recorded and released his candid talk about how the Americans are "treating us like niggers". It was during Obama.
