What do the covid vaccines actually do?

Hi guys. I've been seeing claims on here that the vaccines do not actually prevent you from catching the virus and instead just reduce the symptoms if you do catch it. Are there any sources on this anywhere?

I bet he is a marketer, grad student, etc doing research of the kind that led to the MIT paper whining about the wrong thinkers being literate in academic studies and data analysis.
