I think it's true but I think you and they are misinterpreting it's purpose.

Women are more socially inclined than men and social filtering is an excellent way of sorting out low-status men that are poor mating subjects.

If a male is going to be good breeding stock, he will have to not only be of an acceptable status at the moment, but he will have to be of an ever increasing status. Women were, and still typically are, burdened with making a mate choice when their mate's age is around 20; when their mate has no children and little experience. It's a terrible gamble to put you social status in the hands of an untested man for the remainder of your life as you steadily lose social value. And good men are the only way women can maintain a high social value, or even have increasing social value past breeding age.

Frankly, young women by themselves aren't really capable of making that kind of a decision since their ability to project consequences 50 years down the road is limited by the fact that they didn't live to 50 yet. Social filtering, optimally through their parents and community who can see whether the potential in a young male is good enough, is an excellent way to determine the viability of a breeding male turning into a high social value male, and good father figure.
