Because the world as a whole wasn’t as woke in 2012 compared to 2016.
Google bots are still the most used technology for most search engines (including DuckDuckGo, since from my understanding some block-list sites just aren’t blacklisted on the Duck). Google is VERY ideologically driven. You’re not going to be able to pull up older articles because most of those sites will spout “modern bigotry”.
I was convinced for a bit that people were always puritans, but then I came across message boards from 2009, and any outraged people on there were quickly shut down by the gamers on there or the complainers accepted that it just wasn’t for them.

I was a teenager around that time. Culture was drastically different, particularly humor. Edgy, controversial humor was all the rage. Family Guy and Robot Chicken were still really big at the time. Being easily offended was more something that you were embarrassed about, rather than the badge of honor that it is today.
I was in my 20's and hated it. So much angst and emo edgy stuff while every game was brown and muzzle flash. At the same time they were saying it was artistic and important. Someone actually compared Citizen Kane to GTA IV in a positive light.
"I must destroy this orphanage to save the world, I feel so angsty!"

It matches up with the 90's many pocket and chain clad angry guys who were from hell and had to save the world with edginess.
They both had great stuff, but most of it just got annoying after a while.
You think they stopped autocompleting conservative or controversial queries for any reason other than ideology? They're actively trying to influence the information people expose themselves to. Not sure what's so hard to believe that they do it in other ways than through autocomplete and blacklisting.
This is actually where the term Social Justice "Warriors" comes from. The old vernacular was to refer to people who were constantly starting and participating in "flame wars" on boards which would piss everyone off and rile everyone up was called a "keyboard warrior". Well, guess what happens when a perpetually offended Leftist goes on a board and starts ranting about how everyone's a fucking mysoginyst and you're a sexist bigot that too ignorant to understand how real feminism works because they have a college degree and you don't? Feminism's actually only about believing women are human, and if you don't hate women then you're a Feminist, and also here's some Queer Theory nonsense to boot. Feminism just wants to bring about ... Social Justice.
If you are being a keyboard warrior for Social Justice, then you are a Social Justice Warrior.
Hate to say it, but GamerGate really did get turned into a fixed point in time where shit changed. You really just couldn't nuke entire threads and just ban entire news topics from being discussed on an internet forum. The concept itself was ridiculous. However, the SJWs had effectively worked their way into moderator positions, and in Gaming were the heads of the websites and journalistic outlets. So when they decided to abandon the mask and go full activist, it caused massive blowback from people who were astonished that the establishment organizations were pushing thought and speech control... particularly from journalists and forums.
They were trying to balkanize the gaming audience into Leftist and non-Leftist factions that they could destroy. This is what they did with Atheism vs Atheism+. You couldn't be an atheist without being a Feminist. You couldn't be an Atheist, without promoting equality. You had to be an Atheist... and more. This is why the wrote the "Gamers Are Dead" articles. It was a line in the sand, they were so bold they just drew it fucking behind us. In retrospect it's not really a surprise. The Leftists in Journalism would have looked at consumers as the lowest scum of the earth, literally Consooomers who were being told which Capitalist products to obsess over because the Leftists determined that it was what we should want. They told us to get in line, and a shit load of people said, "absolutely not". Someone told them no, maybe for the first time in their worthless lives, and it scared them forever.
It didn't contain itself to academia and Tumblr. The disease spread and with the help of HR, PR, and Advertising realizing how useful it is to manipulate social media, it's infesting everything.
Luckily the whole systems about to fucking implode, and each and everyone of these fucking assholes have earned the disaster they are creating.
From a technical standpoint. Web 2.0. Until 2010ish most services and websites were server operated. Ie 1 website was ran by 1 server and it was either ran from the businesses own computer/s or a self managed server blade in a warehouse. The websites and info were primarily stored and owned by the creators.
"Cloud computing" took off properly, starting in the domain of music and file sharing services (Spotify, Dropbox).
So companies started moving to that style of website service. You'd no longer have your own server or blade. It would be shared with several others, using premade templates. ALL your data would be kept server host side. Which meant that when SJWism rose you effectively gave all that power over to your service hosts to permit, deny or modify your own damned websites.
This is what we call the Internet now. Web 2.0.
The old style servers and websites still exist, but they are prone to dox ing, domain name takedown and are easy targets for hostile action. Causing them to either shutdown or migrate to Web 2.0 for safety among others.
Depends on what you're searching for. When I search for tech info like phone systems or MS Outlook I've been finding really old problems going back as far as the early 2000's. My issue is I want something current :-)
Your issue may be a problem of the topic and how the websites and search engine trackers cycle out old info. For example if the site archives old info to another domain then that would explain why the data is newer on the site you're looking at.
Have you been applying date-based search conditions? I frequently have to do that in order to narrow down my results. Whether it be extremely recent stuff or moderately old stuff I'm searching for.
Amusingly, I've found you get far fewer results involving routine clickbait articles when you minus out social media names and such. Specifically what I've used was something along the lines of:
-facebook -twitter -reddit -quillet -yahoo -amazon -youtube -twitch -livestream

It’s all pretty nefarious if you ask me.

That's insane.
GTA V is much better than Citizen Kane.

Whoever controls the past controls the present. Whoever controls the present controls the future. Oceania has never been at war with Eastasia.
There are other search engines. Archive sites. Book sites.
