I remember seeing an interview with some leader of some gay rights group on Global BC just after gay marriage was legalized. The reporter asked him, that, since all the rights the group was fighting for would be disbanded, he said "No, because people don't love us enough yet".
I can't describe in words the emotions I felt at that moment, but they ran towards anger and betrayal.
I thought the same thing about abortion when the left went from "safe, legal, and rare" to celebrating people having abortions. There's something deeply disturbing about watching the crowds cheering and crying when the various nations where it's illegal legalize it.
I think the bigger gain for them is complete control over the reproductive cycle. They own it legally, but with the ability to at any moment kill it as well there is no aspect of it that they don't completely dominate.
If society slides a little further downhill, you can bet your ass women will threaten to abort children as a manipulation tactic over their men to break their spirits.
