It is the best anime I have ever seen. It is the only anime that I have rated as a 10/10. It starts a bit slow but it is worth it.
If you want interesting characters, political commentary that makes you think and doesn't preach to you, you won't find another anime that nails it quite like this anime does.
I would write much more about why I think the anime is a masterpiece but it is difficult for me to talk about the best elements of the show without any spoilers.
I've watched the first 5-6 episodes, and it appears to be, on the one hand, the lower officers who are "truly for the people," while the senior pols/officers are all incompetent/corrupt hacks, and on the other, two commanders saying, ah, yes, the enemy is doing X, which I realized they would do while sunning myself on the beach as a 12-year-old."
Does that crap get better?
As for military anime, nothing in my mind is superior to Yōjo Senki, AKA The Saga of Tanya the Evil. I recommend the novels (very well written) or the anime. The first episode is bait; it is exciting, but offers none of the depth that the later episodes so. I would recommend you watch the first three eps before deciding whether to watch the whole thing.
Worst (but certainly funniest) way to describe Tanya: "loli Hitler." (Understandable, though, Tanya definitely scores as a high-functioning Dark Triad type.
Best Way: "Yōjo Senki is a magical girl anime where the girl is an anti-war Patton mixed with an atheist Man For All Seasons; an Invincible Hero on the battlefield but a Failure Hero in the rear echelon."
The beginning is arguably the slowest portion of the story.
There will be a lot of depth to the characters as the story progresses.
There are definitely some competent senior politicians/leadership characters along with smart higher level officer characters.
One of the best things about the show is how gray the morality of the characters are. Barely any characters can be classified as wholly evil or wholly good. To say much more about this would be very spoilerish.
I have seen the first season of the Yojo Senki anime as well as the sequel movie and really enjoyed both. I hope they make a second season of it.
If you are a fan of Yojo Senki I think you should keep watching. There will be events in LOGH you will certainly enjoy.
Is it ther same Tanya who has to constantly prove that her supperiors are quite unimaginative and by the of season tries to stage rogue mission on her own?
At least wait until they explain backgound situation for Empire and FPA before making grand statments.
Don't worry.
All of them die. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
oberstein did nothing wrong
The music is used during battles is all classical German fair. You've got the likes of Wagner, Mozart and Beethoven but the series really likes to use Dvořák and Mahler. There are several places where the music is appropriate.

Good but a bit dry, long and boring at times. Don't watch any of the recent stuff, stick to the old version. It takes a history book style to a space opera.
The character designs, ships, and voice acting are better in the original version.
The new version does better justice to the actual battles and pacing, on account of the original version's dodgy animation.
The books... are a good read although they would have been better as five larger hardbound volumes instead of ten manga sized paperbacks.
I think going with the original anime version is still the best option to watch.
The new version gutted many character designs with a basic bishie look.
New designs for Schenkopp, Reuenthal and Mittermeyer makes me sad.
The new version does have better animation for space battles but I don't think the new version really improved the pacing that much.
The original relied a lot on "narrate while the frame zooms or pans" to stall for time and reduce the amount of cels that needed to be drawn. And when they're doing that pan & zoom gimmickry, that isn't depicted in the cel, they're just showing less than the full frame (again, to make the most efficient use of their drawings).
It wasn't the worst animation I've seen, it's not like First Gundam where you can literally see the scratches on the cels as they slide them around in composite shots. But they definitely min-maxed their animation to squeeze the most seconds out of the fewest number of cels.
I tried watching it when I was younger but got bored and stopped fairly early in. I did the same with Evangelion though and ended up liking that later so I should probably go back and try giving it another watch.
Considering that it started as a series of novels it's to be expected that it's pretty slow. A different sci-fi book that I would recommend is Dune.
Yes.
It's the OG Yang Gang Vs God Emperor
God Emperor Reinhard all day every day.
I actually like Yang a lot as a character but when forced to choose between him and Reinhard I will always pick Reinhard.
First, we're not anon, we have usernames.
Second, it's a good anime that suffers from the ravages of age: Like older anime such as Lodoss War, it is notably slower than modern things, and can take a while to get into them, but if you appreciate old style animation can also be very beautiful, if a lot of scene reuse and static pan-shot cells.
The years have not been kind, I cannot give it 10/10, but it is still highly rated despite the flaws of its (lack of) technology.
