With people moving to Parler, it'd be nice to see what is going on, but I don't want to give out a phone number.
I see I can access an account by URL, but cannot see a search or anything.

It requires a phone number to sign up. You might have some luck with a VOIP number via some website or app, but I've read that many have not.
I only have a Twitter account from when they didn't require a phone number, and it was only to occasionally follow Norm McDonald's ramblings; it has zero posts, just like my Reddit account.
