How hard would it have been for them to say "Ellen page is now Elliot Page" or something like that.
Also I kind of hope for their sake that they are Trans and not seriously confused as this seems to be the path a person I know took. Came out as Lesbian, then decided they were Trans, for some reason thinking being a guy would make it easier for them to get dates then realise being a guy wasn't anywhere near that easy so last I heard they were trying to claim to be nonbinary to try and get the best of both worlds seemingly and they were not having a very good time of it
The number of trans people as a percentage of the population has drastically increased in the past few years. Either there's a massive public health crisis with a not yet understood root cause, or people are becoming trans because it's trendy. I'm guessing the latter, and TBH it calls into question her decision to come out as lesbian back in the day.
I think it's some bullshit with idiots pushing people claiming unless they conform to their rigid gender binary ideas they're Trans. It's a lot of activist types pushing this and often seemingly people on the spectrum being convinced about such things that they don't fit in because they're trans or something.

I agree it's likely mostly the latter. However, I wouldn't be shocked if there was also a bit of the former. The whole 'putting chemicals in the water that turn the fricking frogs gay' meme, and all that. I bet there are environmental factors, in addition to the societal ones. Isn't autism also on the rise? And there being a decent correlation there.
So my guess is it's primarily social nonsense, but with the backing of a legitimate rise in mental illnesses too.
I wish we would study it from the standpoint of a public health crisis (whose root cause could be a variety of factors including social). Unfortunately now that transgenderism is treated as a moral good, No one would be able to do such a study and keep their career intact.
That would be deadnaming him. The moment he comes out as Elliot it is transphobic and very fascist to call him Ellen. And next week when he's Ellen again, you'll be calling him Elliot, you bigot.
You'd think the whole acceptance thing would be helped by the idea of "There were going by this name they're now this name" to show a very clear yes they've transitioned. Rather than trying to pretend that's always been their name. Hell I don't think the name they were going by at the time should matter you can still argue they might have felt like they were a dude but they didn't present as such.
I mean using those standards my mate shagged a guy called Clive because 5 year after he broke up with a girl she transitioned to being a man lol. It's kinda stupid really to think about.
I'm not saying suddenly Elliot appears into existence give all the past to them too and history but it seems weird to erase the time he was female.

Dude, he's wearing a baseball cap. He's got this man shit down, don't worry.
Watch him grow a moustache and buy a motorbike next lol

It's pretty obvious what's happening imo.
Being trans gets you attention, sympathy and sometimes money.
With incentives like that, it isn't surprising at all to see an explosion of self described transgenders.
If claiming you're a frog stuck in a human body got you similar attention/benefits, we'd suddenly see a huge uptick in people claiming to be frogs.
Mental illness became really trendy a few years ago.
