The number of trans people as a percentage of the population has drastically increased in the past few years. Either there's a massive public health crisis with a not yet understood root cause, or people are becoming trans because it's trendy. I'm guessing the latter
I agree it's likely mostly the latter. However, I wouldn't be shocked if there was also a bit of the former. The whole 'putting chemicals in the water that turn the fricking frogs gay' meme, and all that. I bet there are environmental factors, in addition to the societal ones. Isn't autism also on the rise? And there being a decent correlation there.
So my guess is it's primarily social nonsense, but with the backing of a legitimate rise in mental illnesses too.
I wish we would study it from the standpoint of a public health crisis (whose root cause could be a variety of factors including social). Unfortunately now that transgenderism is treated as a moral good, No one would be able to do such a study and keep their career intact.

It's pretty obvious what's happening imo.
Being trans gets you attention, sympathy and sometimes money.
With incentives like that, it isn't surprising at all to see an explosion of self described transgenders.
If claiming you're a frog stuck in a human body got you similar attention/benefits, we'd suddenly see a huge uptick in people claiming to be frogs.
