Hate crimes are just a tool to try and "prove" the narrative that racism is a major/growing problem. Case in point for the US, where black people kidnapped a man and tortured him live on facebook. All because they believed he voted for Trump. That wasn't going to be recorded as a hate crime originally, until there was backlash towards the decision.Even then, it ended up being recorded because they say the guy was targeted for being mentally retarded, not because he was white.
