how did the straight, white, middle-class (men) take control of our society to be come our default for everything

we didn't become, we always were, because this country was built by whites, with white principles, for whites. anything non-whites might enjoyhere is because of people taking advantage of our benevolence, and the subversion of our institutions to allow those who hate white principles to take root and rot the country from within.
