As someone whose username speaks for itself, GamerGate was merely a battle in the ongoing 2014 Culture War, one that had been brewing for at least 3 - 4 years earlier.
Occupy Wall Street was the OG - regular people having enough of the elite. The only problem was it got quickly overtaken by what we now call "SJWs", and we didn't quite understand why or how at the time.
Then we had the whole Chic-Fil-A debacle, i.e. how dare a restaurant not cater to people outside its target audience.
GG lasted for about a year right up until that dumb Law & Order episode killed the last of its momentum, Niko gave the 8ch board to the /ayy/-team, and Acid Man proved to be useless. By that point, all focus shifted to Trump.
We got him elected, and we've just done it again knowing the game was rigged from the start. The war is no longer about gaming; it's about people who want to live free versus those who love the taste of authoritarian boot. And it is getting very tiring, although this latest grand victory has rejuvenated me somewhat.
