This is the essence of the intellectual elite who are actually very intelligent and are used to making wildly complicated abstract rhetorical arguments about how if you re-define and re-analyze everything in just the right way, then they are right.
It's mental masturbation to the extreme, and you actually have to be pretty intelligent to do it.

I'd say you also need more than a hint of sociopathy to actually go through with all this re-defining, because at the end of the day it's nothing more than lying (to yourself) and normal people do not like to lie.
The ability to lie and manipulate is also a highly intellectual act that requires a good deal of abstraction. This isn't to say you can't have dumb pathological liars. But to be any good at it, you need to be at least clever.
