They thought the ranked ballot would work in MacKay's favour because even people who supported other candidates would mark the establishment frontrunner as one of their preferences. Instead, they've discovered that there is a substantial Anyone-But-MacKay movement amongst the party membership, because at least most of the grassroots are actually still conservative, and that a majority of the ballots have O'Toole, Lewis and Sloan in varying orders of preference without ranking MacKay at all. So now they're trying to figure out how to disqualify enough ballots to give him the leadership anyway.
