Yeah, the more you think about the plot, the less it makes sense. With how strict the guards at the camps were, I wouldn't think they would allow children to have lunch dates with people through the fence. The final scene is the worst with the main kid being pushed into the "gas chamber" by the other adults. You'd have to be pretty brainwashed to think it would be able to happen.
