It's not just zero downvotes showing, all downvotes have been wiped from the entire site going back since the very beginning. That's how extensive this panic measure has been.
I just checked my replies to comments from lefty schizos that I know were heavily down voted and you're right. In fact, removing my original down vote appeared to add one to the counter, but removed it when I hit the button again. It looks like any engagement at all is bring considered positive
