Idk. I just paid attention to the consequences of that shipping lane being closed. The oil gets processed into nitrogen for fertilizer. We don't use the oil from there, but we like the rest of the world use the by product, nitrogen for farming. It seems to me that after this we wouldn't want people that hate our way of life to be in that position again.
I actually didn’t know that about fertilizer, very interesting I’ll have to look into that. I think regime change would be a good thing but I don’t think it’ll be easy and would likely require boots on the ground as they say.
Maybe you could really decimate the country with bombs enough to weaken the ruling power so that the people can revolt, but presumably you run the risk of destabilizing the whole thing into chaos and large terrorist groups take power and it’s even worse than it was.
Because it's not true, nitrogen typically gets fixed from the air via the Haber Bosch process into ammonia for fertilizer, which specifically uses methane, aka natural gas, to produce hydrogen, not crude oil. I dunno how much natural gas exactly gets shipped on freight ships, but I'm pretty confident it's a tiny fraction compared to what goes through fixed pipelines. You do need phosphates for fertilizer too, and a sizable amount of phosphate salts are shipped from north Africa, but that only makes phosphate a shipping problem going China's way, not to us.
The correct element is sulfur.
