One nifty thing I always liked about LoTR analogies is that once a hobbit learned of the real world outside of the shire, he couldn't live among the shire folk anymore. He just didn't fit in and they just didn't understand so he felt a need to leave them behind.
Accurate take for all the awakened people living in Western societies full of NPCs. You don't fit in and you feel like you need to leave because the false reality the people are living doesn't work for you once you know the truth of reality.
Unlike the Tolkien world, the awakened in reality have no where else to go to. It used to be America, and part of the reason it was founded was to be able to escape to a better place. But now, where else can you tactically retreat?
