Could it have happened? Possibly.

Could it have happened exactly as described? Also possible.

Could it have happened but in a context where the stated actions make actual sense and a considerable amount of context has been left out? Pretty good chance.

Do we live in a time where the question is not "Why would he lie?" but "Why would he not?" Absolutely.
