Egypt was using the Rosetta Stone as building material, and many of these countries are unstable and filled with open corruption, but sure, those artifacts in the British Museum would totally have been safer in, and would remain safe if returned to, the places they were collected from.
well if you want to be fair on the Rosetta Stone thing nobody in the past, nor most people today, really cared about history until like late 19th early 20th century and the modern museum exhibit made it entertaining. People repurposed most of what we consider historic since the first building was created.
But I do agree that it was explorers during the 19th century that are the reason so much important history has been well preserved and studied. If it was left where it was it would have been stolen or just broken and we still would struggle to understand many ancient languages
