Aorta is still in the chest below the throat and between the lungs, by the time you're in the neck that's the left common carotid artery which is one of the two direct lines to the brain along with the right common carotid. Cut those and someone dies very quickly, it's why choke/strangleholds work so quickly when they cut off those very lines of bloodflow.
