I agree with the general thrust of what you’re saying, but I would point out that the relatively recent advent of hardcore, HD, internet porn—and access to increasingly specific fetish content in written and drawn form as well—is completely removed from all historical precedent. When someone over a certain age says “we had porn growing up,” they tend to be thinking of a couple Playboys they stashed, maybe one or two videotapes that made the rounds… what their kids, male and female, can access very easily is a hundred different gangbang bukakke videos, or dozens of pieces of erotic fiction about being kidnapped and raped.
Is it necessarily an “oh my god, this is doing unthinkable damage, we need to censor everything everywhere, time to roll out the draconian ID laws” type of crisis? Probably not. But is it just as harmless as crude drawings of dicks and a handful of porno mags? That’s probably not the case either.
