It's a vicious cycle. There are so many people today that feel disrespected and atomized in society, so when these petty conflicts bubble up, both sides can feel like digging their heels to hold on to what little dignity they have. The employee doesn't want to be disrespected by another asshole customer and the other guy doesn't want to be disrespected by the "loser" working at GameStop. We're crossing through dire straights and it's too easy to spark a conflict like this. Not an excuse for either, but it helps to understand what's motivating people.
