Gamergate is perhaps the first time there was organic widespread protest against the cultural left's infection of a medium. In a distant sense, you could argue this paved the way for future rebuttals in other aspects of life by showing there is support for those opposing that encroachment. Also the left hates traitors the most, and a lot of early Gamergaters were liberal-minded to begin with, so they can never let it go.
