Netanyahu trying to topple Saddam to undermine Hezbollah is dumb as fuck if that's true (which wouldn't surprise me if it is).
Hezbollah was always an Iranian project, and the political split between Assad and Saddam in the 73 coup meant that there wasn't going to be a united Ba'ath party. Saddam is evil, but if your objective was stopping Hamas and Hezbollah, Iraq's the wrong target.
Frankly, I'd be willing to bet that most of Iraq's nuke program was probably directed at Iran, not Israel. Saddam didn't launch massive poison gas strikes on Israel, but Iranian forces in Iraq because of their human wave offensives.
It is true.
isreal is a resource poor nation. they have nothing. they can only survive by stealing from their neighbors.
bibi's had PTSD since he got his brother killed in a bullshit operation.
these people aren't in charge because they're good leaders.
This is an 1800's level economic analysis.
Yea and your dick isn't short compared to your brothers. So what?
oh wow, you're so cool
As we wound up to the second Iraq war, Glenn Beck claimed to have talked to high level sources during his trip to Israel, and described their whole plan in the middle east as cutting off the head of the snake, Iran. The idea is we would have continued presence of forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan to put pressure on them and invade when the time came. Obviously it didn't work out that way but I distinctly remember him calling that the real reason for the war and saying it was a good thing.
I do get the idea that toppling Iraq could be used to make Iran an enemy, but my god has this plan gone all sorts of wrong. Iran has almost won in Iraq because of our stupid handling of the war and the peace; then on top of that Saddam was an American ally (frankly, I blame the Gulf War on the US State Department for being nonchalant about the invasion when Saddam asked if there would be an objection or response to the US for the invasion). I'm glad he's dead (especially his sons), but FFS could someone have any fucking proper plan?
Then Afghanistan.... that shit was handed over to Pakistan, so well the fuck done there.
It seems to me like none of that plan was necessary, and the same things could have been achieved by getting Saddam to act like an American vassal, and getting the Mujahadeen onside originally.
Sachs is generalizing the details for effect. Iraq has been a longtime enemy of Israel and Netanyahu probably just wanted that chess piece knocked over.
That sounds right, but it's still a dumb plan when you could use Iraq to keep Iran off balance, which is a much more dangerous threat. Syria is the more immediate threat, but the weaker one. Egypt was kind of the epitome of strong and immediate, so a peace deal was an imperative long ago.
