I never liked him. I don't need Bond to be hatchet-faced or gritty. He's a pretty boy who gets lucky in a lot of ways. Is that implausible? Very. But I don't think they should change the character if they're going to use the character at all.
One could also just make their own Bond, which is I presume how Jason Bourne came to be.
