Alien, is there another franchise that's been constantly bad that still has the cache it has.
Honestly, the issue with Alien is that its a massively multimedia franchise that most people don't even know exists.
For every bad movie there was a solid non-mainstream game or comic or whatever that came out. In fact, its filled with extremely good games across dozens of genres for decades but most people only know Colonial Marines (for the meme) and Isolation (which hit mainstream press).
Which I imagine is what keeps its value as high as it is.
Dark Descent is a solid entry too, and I'm not even a huge fan of squad tactics games. You're right it's not really mainstream either though.
I liked it, but it needed more time cooking to add more enemy types and levels to keep everything from being so samey. But there is a really solid baseline there I hope other games pull from.
But its a good example of a game that no one even knew came out and then it just passed by with zero acknowledgement. In fact, the most press it got was people complaining that it was "woke trash" very briefly.
Dang that might be fun
