You can get your lawyer to represent you at a bail hearing. I mean I think it's a good idea. But they do assign you somebody. So you don't have to.
If your family calls the lawyer right away (good luck getting phone calls in jail), he can just zoom into a hearing. They are doing all these remotely. Since covid.
He's based in Vermont. It looks like this happened in New Orleans, so even if he has a lawyer on retainer back home he'd still get a Public Defender in LA until he can find local counsel.

Looks like they just give you a public defender while you are in jail so they don't have delays while people look for a lawyer in the Yellow Pages.
