When you think about it with the amount of money that gets pissed away on these projects realistically if they're barely spending any money on production they can pocket the difference and live comfortably for the rest of their lives. It's a pretty brilliant con and they hate gamers so it's not as if they're trying to win credibility or build a legacy.
The more I do the maths on how much these guys are probably paying themselves the more it makes sense. The only thing that's missing is the government rabbit hole and glowies trying to commit game developers to mass surveillance on their own playerbases. It was already found out that Riot games had a psychologist attempting experiments on them so it's not that much of a stretch.
