Yep, that lie never held water. Face scanning is a solved problem that's been used in games for decades now. We already have documented evidence of devs admitting to uggifying models either for their stupid cult reasons or because some ugly female in middle-management demanded it, so this is one of the dumbest excuses they still try to pull.
Even just perceived attention. An actress shows up to do her job; guess what? You have to direct her. There will be a lot of interaction, back and forth, and possibly even positioning, requiring gasp physical contact.
Average manager? You go out of your way not to interact with them.
That never really works out for them.
It does, but only because the full end result is;
Now go look at the face models versus in game character models from Left 4 Dead 2. That's from 2009.

Also it breaks whatever rigging work they do in mocap since those faces no longer look quite human
