I think you underestimate the way people watch shows. I know plenty of people whose entire "home time" after work is to just sit down with their phone, family, or food and just shotgun 4-6 episodes of something constantly. Until they run out of shows and just consume whatever new thing happens.
You're a weeb, so you've probably done it with dozens of anime or manga that you can barely remember to even care about a few weeks after watching 24 episodes of it.
The only difference here is that the "numbers" of watchers is being used in a political war, but the majority of its watchers aren't involved in that and only being used to say people care about its themes.
I used to do that, I mean when I first got into anime I watched In another world with my Smartphone so yeah I did watch some trash sometimes.
But I chalk that up to being new to the medium than just accepting it. I've dropped A LOT of shows because they were just bland, lecturing or just insultingly bad. I'm know I'm not alone in that with some of my older relatives watching K-dramas now....despite no knowledge of Korean and bad eyesight for subtitles because 'it's pretty'.
I think we can just look at the drop off for current Doctor Who to show how many are like that will mindlessly watch and how many have a limit and will ditch if it goes beyond that.
And I think the numbers show that most people drop these shows pretty regularly too. Its why they always talk only about the first episodes or big finales "viewership" while ignoring that they might lose 60% or more watchers between ep 1 and 2, or season 1 and 2.
But I think we both know the large amount of people who just go on Crunchyroll or Mangadex or whereever and just click on what's on the front page to coomsoom because they've run out of other things to do and just want to be coomsooming. These shows are no different other than being spotlighted by the culture war, despite their viewerbase being largely not part of it.
There is a limit, as you said with Doctor Who, but its always very surface level rather than these themes the Leftists' ramble about. Doctor Who its entirely "does this main guy make me horny" while Star Wars its "does this lightsaber duel look cool" or something.
