I think the official number for Gibson is like 139. Like I said before, I’ve heard MLB players at the time praise Gibson and he is in the HOF. No need to do this. I’ve seen ppl on FB calling everyone racist for not praising this move. Forgive me for questioning the motives of MLB. I collect baseball cards as well and I know they are coming out with NL inserts. Makes me question the timing even more
It’s only acceptable if they double down and add ALL leagues in. Then I can finally be put down in the record books for my 6 home runs I hit as a 12 year old in summer league
That baseball Reddit is so fucking woke I’m honestly shocked. I got 20 downvotes and banned from the sub because I said the Braves chop was perfectly fine and it’s silly to try and change it
I was pleasantly surprised as well how many redditors declared this stat merger lunacy as well (and didn't get downvoted to oblivion).
I don't recall that being an acceptable position a few years back when Baseball Reference started merging stats and posting "The Negro Leagues ARE Major League" agitprop everywhere on banners.
Baseball is my favorite sport and at one point my goal was to make it to the majors (Obviously didn’t happen), and I love the history. One of my dream jobs would be a baseball historian. I’ve heard arguments for and against doing this but considering the time we live in I don’t see any other reason for doing this than the usual pandering. The best Negro League stars who didn’t play in the majors have been recognized with Hall of Fame inductions. The stats are there to see, but now they just want to say Josh Gibson holds most records now. I wish Gibson could’ve played with MLB players but it didn’t happen. The argument for this move that I hear is that the leagues prior to MLB are included but do we add home runs to Hank Aaron’s records? What about the MLB players who barnstormed against negro leaguers?
This is retarded. There are a few negro leaguers who are big "what ifs" like Satchel Paige for example. But this is just an extension of the retarded DEI cultural rot society is undergoing right now. Sorry to see it jnfect baseball even further. Just another reminder to try and distance yourself and find other hobbies.
And the great Negro League players have been honored. People in comment sections (young ones) are acting as if these players aren’t in the HOF. Paige got to play in his later years but he is my biggest what if. Dizzy Dean once said if they could play together, they would have the pennant wrapped up by June and then they could go fishing until the WS started.
I have some really nice Negro League bobbleheads of Satchel Paige and Larry Doby from a Kickstarter campaign a couple years back. Very nicely made. Indians fan if you didn't already guess lol.
But yeah it's just redditards being redditards. Nothing to be done at it to an extent. I can't help but argue with them just to invade their bubble and show that there is actual dissent to a move like this. But really there isn't much point.
Cool! Paige helped Indians win their WS right? When I was in the Air Force I was housemates with Larry Doby’s great nephew. I’m a Rangers fan, so there is no NL history but Charley Pride was a mega fan
Excuse me, we have multiple. But yeah he was with them for their win in 1948. And wow that's pretty cool about Doby's great nephew. Wonder if he knows any cool insider stories.
Sorry, I should’ve said 48 series. He wasn’t much into baseball but he knew that I was a fan and that I collected baseball cards so he told me all he knew
I’m a bit of a stat nerd and love a good sabermetrics debate. A lot of the people commenting are baseball casuals so they don’t get just how big stats are. Like you said it’s the biggest sport for it

Ha, and I can add my baseball career stats

Reddit is fully infiltrated now and it hasn't been good for over a decade. It's just bots and NPCs all the way down now.

Exactly.
It’s all just a flex to rewrite history and snatch some bonus DEI cash as well

Baseballs nerds love their stats more than other sports nerds. I wonder how badly this will go over.

They'll kill Hank Aaron achievements by uplifting absolute no names based upon flimsy made up stats.
