The conventions were often a complete fucking waste of money to begin with and were clearly just a way to try and hook games journalists and streamers by making them feel special so they'd say good things about the studios. With journalists looking at mass layoffs and streamers mostly being thots now because all the real gamers keep getting banned what's the point? Any good game these days that has real traction is going to be marketed through word of mouth mainly.
Fair, I mean certainly you could make the case back in the day back when it was all big and I mean E3 levels of big. However if it was so profitable they wouldn't be cancelling it all now.
Exactly. Hype is all lower now than it used to be, Blizzard makes more money selling mounts, microtransactions and carved up pieces of software than they used to, so there's no need to run a hype machine like Blizcon anymore. They shut it down, I think on 2021 as well, because they had no releases to announce. The profit factor just isn't there.

I thought conventions were originally designed as a nerd and geek breeding program since how else do you get introverts together? /s
On the contrary - those conventions made them a lot of money.
