I have a friend at work, he is from France, he absolutely hates Paris, he now moved in some rural place a couple of hours drive from Carcassonne. Oddly enough he is not French but Moroccan, still hates it.
I also have 2 friends that moved for a while in Paris, only thing they talked about was literal shit, rats and how bad it was. I don't know where in Paris, all I know that they could see the Eiffel Tower from one of the windows if you stretch your neck.
Also the yellow vest protests did not look very French.

Generally, the attitude of Europeans towards capital cities is the same as those of Americans towards San Francisco. Crime is higher and it's inhabited by out of touch scumbags.

Quality of life doesn't discriminate. Unless you need the stuff that's in a big city, stay away.
I'm not saying that Paris (or any other place) is 'great', and like almost everywhere in Europe it has declined a lot over the past 20 years, just that it's not the Boschian hellscape that Americans imagine it to be.
