I have a friend at work, he is from France, he absolutely hates Paris
Generally, the attitude of Europeans towards capital cities is the same as those of Americans towards San Francisco. Crime is higher and it's inhabited by out of touch scumbags.
Oddly enough he is not French but Moroccan, still hates it.
Quality of life doesn't discriminate. Unless you need the stuff that's in a big city, stay away.
I'm not saying that Paris (or any other place) is 'great', and like almost everywhere in Europe it has declined a lot over the past 20 years, just that it's not the Boschian hellscape that Americans imagine it to be.
