Since I deleted Starfield (maybe I’ll redownload it one day) from Steam I’m thinking of getting Baldurs Gate 3. I hear it can be fun if you ignore the gay stuff. Are 1 and 2 worth it? Also gonna look for some older RPGs on Steam or hack and slash

Way too linear for my tastes and I abhorred the teammates, characters, and overall story. The added romance elements also was a massive turnoff for me. And making Imeon play such a vital role in the story of the sequel made me not only hate her but hate the first couple hours of the game since they forced her on your team (along with a few other people like Minsc, who I also couldn't stand); the whole dungeon crawl in the beginning was also just too obnoxious and annoying. I prefer when games start you off with a bit of freedom before locking you in the way BG2 does.
I get why younger people like BG2 and other newer BioWare games, but the restricted style of play was just never my cup of tea. Same reason I can't stand the Firaxis XCOM games, since they're way too restrictive compared to the Microprose X-Com trilogy.
I really have no idea what you are talking about. Looking at an end game save file, 60% of the quests were right after the intro with no story progression at all. Over half the game completely optional and in the order I chose, available right after the intro. It sounds like you just followed the main quest line.
Some of the teammates are in fact annoying. Minsc, Jaheira. You don't have to take them.
If you want to give BG2 another chance, try a solo run. I did swashbuckler rogue to level 8 and then dual class to fighter. Only spoiler is you'll want to pickpocket a ring of regeneration from Ribald Barterman right off.
You're absolutely right that most are available right after the intro. They set up the side-quests in BG2 to be streamlined in conjunction with the main quest, you basically had everything right there so you didn't get lost or make it to the end of the game and find yourself too low a level. The thing is, though, I didn't like that everything was so streamlined -- the thief's guild quest, the carnival quest, and a few other quests didn't require any kind of digging or exploring, since they streamlined the maps to keep everything local and progress related.
I remember playing through BG1 and sometimes missing certain quests because you had to find them at certain points in the game on certain maps. I really enjoyed the fact that you had to work to find certain trinkets, chests, or small side-quests sprinkled throughout the game map.
I remember doing most of the side-quests in BG2 because I'm pretty sure I was either level 18 or 20 by the time I got to the final boss and breezed through him using some kind of cheese build, can't remember what it was at this point. But I remember that it was made far easier if you had the dragon scale armour and sword by defeating the black dragon. I think there were like two dragon bosses in the game? A black and a red one?
That's true, but it felt like they didn't have as many non-annoying teammates in BG2. Everyone seemed like an annoying chatter box. I think there was a silent but deadly archer, and a generic knight in the first game who didn't return in the second game? But I'm not entirely sure. I just hated how they forced Imoen in your party because I never liked her, even in the first game.
Forgot you could dual class -- didn't you get that at level 10 or 15 or something? I think the level cap was around level 20?
I did all those quests in act2/3 because I knew where they were, but even then I missed a few that were locked out. For instance one of the churches got mad at me and I couldn't do any quests in that area. Also all the Bodhi/Thieves quests are locked out depending on who you side with.
People first playthrough just find quests everywhere they go because every place has a purpose in BG2 (no 119 Generic Homes), but they're not "streamlined in conjunction with the main quest", they scale. If you do them early they'll be easy, later on they'll have higher difficulty. Same with the main quest, if you only did the main quest you'd be fine at least until the final boss.
There's at least 4 dragons in BG2 btw.
Humans can dual class at any level, the first class frozen at that level and disabled until you get to that level with the 2nd class. All the new exp goes to the 2nd class vs multiclass where it's split between each. So it's a bit more challenging to get going.
