You see this sort of thing with regard to ancient Greek and Roman society, as well. I keep encountering comments and mentions of them being extremely gay and effeminate, taking boy lovers, and all sorts of very modern Left Wing things the goal of which seems to be to contaminate a reference to an extremely strong and masculine culture. It's revolting.
One way to look at Greek and Roman history is that, if archeologists were to dig up our cultural artifacts 1000 years from now, they would conclude we were all homos as well.
